My wife recently read Portrait of a Thief and enjoyed it! She said it's fun and fast-paced. Regarding re-reads, I read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy and then listened to the audiobook version a few years later. I've also listened to the audiobook version of John le Carre's The Night Manager twice, which is just incredible to hear aloud.
One of my favorite books is The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, the audiobook is so good that I like to listen to it every year or two. Also thinking of re-listening to Krakatoa by Simon Winchester, the massive volcanic explosion was mentioned in the latest Veronica Speedwell (An Impossible Imposter by Deanna Raybourn) and I remember it was fascinating.
They are lots of fun, I really enjoy the banter between Veronica & Stoker. Time to break the glass! I love that she's named after a plant, I've put several in my garden, the bees love them.
A recommendation: I just finished re-reading The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh, which I read in high school and adored. It was just as good as I remembered.
I just finished We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, and I’m already looking forward to reading it again. It had a surprise ending which made me rethink the whole book.
I have a whole stack of books I reread on a regular basis for all kinds of reasons. Just finished rereading The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields and pan to re-read Ladder of Years by Ann Tyler for the fourth time this summer. One summer I re-read every single Patrick O’Brian book in the Aubrey- Maturin series and have read individual books over again since. A great newsletter, Elizabeth!
I'm going to reread The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. I wanted to read the second book in the trilogy but couldn't remember details of characters after like 3 years, lol.
Uh, I'm going to have to get that coffee table book.
I don't re-read books very often -- they must be among my all-time most beloved and favorite books -- but to that end, I'll recommend The Little Friend by Donna Tartt. It was a very important book to me during the summer of 2017 and I'll always cherish it.
I used to be a big re-reader, though it's hard to find the time anymore. I've read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo 4 or 5 times (yup, the unabridged version), and I've re-read some favorites from childhood like The Phantom Tollbooth (which I would totally re-read again). But I'm looking forward to another re-read soon: my favorite book of all time, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. I've re-read it a handful of times, but I get something new out of it each time.
All of these sound great! The Stanford one would be my first pick since I too loved Devil in The White City.
Portrait of a Thief sounds so good, I've put it on hold at the library! Thanks for the recommendation :)
Let me know what you think!

I have been saving the Veronica Speedwell series for some sort of break-glass emergency. I might just have to read them.

One of my favorites!
Are we the same person? Why do we like all of the same books? <3
