I finished Lessons in Chemistry last week and loved it! So worth the hype, and it is set before 1975!

I found you through your comment on Anne Helen Petersen's "What are you reading?" thread. Happy to be here with fellow book lovers! It's so hard to pick a pre-1975 favorite, but I think I would go with "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" or "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Hard to go wrong with those two!

You were highlighted a few times during the June 2 Substack Shoutout Thread - including by me! - so hopefully that brought you some new readers. Keep up the awesome work!

A couple of pre-1975 titles on my TBR pile are Passing by Nella Larsen and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I also want to re-read The Bell Jar (I used to read it like every year back in high school/college).

Excellent picks. Last year, I read a YA true-crime themed retelling of Rebeccas. It was ... surprisingly good.

The Great Gatsby. Not an original choice, but still a favorite.

Does a book like The Nickel Boys count for pre-1975 fiction? I have also been reading a fair amount of WWII fiction -that’s before 1975. Most recently in that genre would be “The Dressmaker’s Gift” by Fiona Valpy

Nickel Boys definitely counts!

Currently reading Boyfriend Material and it is the perfect romance/escape/beach read novel that I needed.

Rec for memoir(?)/nonfiction: "Know my name" by Chanel Miller. Best nonfiction book I've read this year, by far.

I’ve happily discovered you through Emilie Sommer at East City Books. Looking forward to new reads! One of all time fav pre1975 is Ask the Dust by John Fante. Old Hollywood feel.
