My issue with access at school ibrarires is that not all parents have the time or transportation to get to the public library (I also had a friend who was unable to check out books at the public library because of fines and lost book fees back in the day). And now they are coming after public libraries as well, because of their success at banning books in school libraries. And there was one state that was trying to ban books at Barnes and Noble. So there's that.
Most big-city public libraries offer online book borrowing. It’s usually a 2-3 week turn around but you can renew if you’re not finished. Obviously, you would have to read the book on a kindle which if you’re like me, there’s nothing like the feel of the paper and dog earring your favorite pages.
This is great -- also, that stay on ELEVEN adults launching the majority of the book challenges is wild. They're using up so much of the librarians' time and keeping them from the rest of their job... which I think is intentional.
Thank you, Elizabeth! Can't think of a better time to recognize Banned Books Week.
Come to think of it, it's always an important time to recognize the power of words of their availability far and wide and how terrifying it when specific groups try to control access to that resource. My sister's friend, a teacher in Florida, sent her a photo of the school library where she teaches--empty as a prison cell. It seems the plan is to allow books back onto those bare shelves ones by one upon approval of a very small board, comprised largely of parents.
I love the sound of the Laura Griffin book. Sounds great. Also looking forward to the Richard Osman interview. I haven't actually read any of his books, but he comes across as a lovely man and that appeals to me.
Congrats on reaching 6,000 readers! Well deserved.
Was coming here to say this :)
Thank you!!
this is so great, Elizabeth! and I'm really excited for the Richard Osman interview--just put the newest one on hold at the library!
Aah! Let me know what you think.
