This is so interesting. My book was published by Berkley in 2016. There was a wall between me and the artists who designed the covers. All communication flowed through my editor. I was asked for ideas and provided some. I am not a big-name author, of course, so perhaps the two designs that emerged -- one wildly inappropriate -- were all I merited. I get that (hurts but is true). On the other hand, it would have been so nice to connect enough to know what the thinking was about the cover we ended up going with almost as default - and with the advocacy of my editor who had to convince her boss. I'm pretty sure the designer did not read the book but then I'm not sure that it was possible given the workload she/he probably was working under and how they viewed my book in terms of priority. It's always interesting to me to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.

What a great interview, thanks for this. I love all the behind the scenes information about book, writing, publishing etc. The book covers just keep getting better and better.

I really enjoyed this interview, especially because I just watched the Brené Brown special on Netflix where she talks about the journey she went on with her editors to come to a consensus on a cover. She also talks about how the cover is so vastly different depending on what country it was distributed in.
