Thanks for reminding me about Ann Patchett's book. I have it and have read some of the essays. And now I must return to it and read a few more!

These Precious Days just surprised the heck out of me -- I don't know what I was expecting (I am a so-so Patchett fan) but when I read it last year, it kind of bowled me over. Likening it to lemonade is apt, I think.

I’m reading this late but also just in time (for me). I read and loved Ann Patchett’s collection of essays. Although I have the book and not the audio-book version, her voice is as familiar and direct and rolls off the page into my ear. She is one of those writers who expresses herself confidently and yet with great compassion. Lately, I’ve enjoyed her essays as much if not more than some of her novels although Bel Canto and The Magician’s Assistant will remain among my top ten books of all time. I revisit the opening to Bel Canto often.

As for the snacking cakes -- I’ve seen this book and thought about it -- my diabetic husband loves cake and I’m always trying to find ones that I can adapt for him. My baking skills are limited but growing so maybe this will be something to check out. Thanks so much, as always, Elizabeth.
