If I may, I'd like to add a recommendation along the lines of 'not overtly gory but haunting and beautiful' in Ronald Malfi's "The Night Parade". Despite the quantity of virus-based horror tales out on the market, this tale is deeply touching as a tale of what a father will do to protect their child in a time of seemingly world-threatening apocalypse without getting too gruesome. Touching in a queer way.
